Using Your Laptop in the Libraries

Internet access from a laptop is only available to students, faculty, and staff of the Claremont Colleges. Using your laptop in the Libraries implies that you agree to abide by the guidelines for appropriate use.

This document will cover the following:

Instructions for wireless access

Once you are registered, your computer should detect an open network named CINE from most places in the library. This is the Claremont Colleges wireless network.

If you have a Windows PC, your computer should provide you with instructions to connect to a nearby wireless network. You can follow the instructions to connect to CINE.

If you have a Mac and your laptop doesn't automatically connect (or ask you to connect) to the CINE network, then click on the Wireless icon in the right part of the toolbar at the top of the screen (it should look like a slice of pizza, but white). You should see a list of networks there and CINE should be one of the options. Click on CINE and your computer should connect you to the network.

Instructions for wired access

Wired access to the internet from a laptop is available only to current students, faculty, and staff of The Claremont Colleges. To use a wired network connection you need to complete NetReg online registration, which takes just a minute and may require a restart of your computer. NetReg allows the owner of each computer on the Libraries' network to be identified.

For your convenience, ethernet cables may be checked out from the Services Desk in Honnold/Mudd and are available for purchase from the Copy Center.

Instructions for NetReg Registration

  • Plug your laptop into one of the wall jacks marked with a red dot indicating that it is active.
  • Make sure your computer's TCP/IP settings are set to DHCP or "Obtain an IP address automatically." This is the default on most computers.
  • Use a web browser to visit netreg.libraries.claremont.edu (this link will not work outside of the Claremont Colleges) and complete the instruction you find there.
  • When prompted, enter your name and the 10-digit number from your Claremont College ID or Library card.
  • Registration is required once per semester.
